PRESS RELEASE: 2 December 2009

                                          PRESS CLUB, KOLKATA                                     BACK

Dear Members of Print and Electronic Media,

Only 54 days more. The Worlds largest attended 34th International Kolkata Book Fair 2010 is about to be commenced on schedule according to the calendar of International Book Fairs published by the International Publishers Association Geneva from 27 January to 7 February 2010.The formal inauguration ceremony of the fair will be held on 25 January 2010, Monday at 4:30pm.

We are happy to inform you that in accordance with the calendar of Book Fairs released by the International Publishers Association, Geneva, the 34th International Kolkata Book Fair will commence form 27 January and will continue upto 7 February 2010. The Inauguration Ceremony will be held on 26 January 2010 at 4:30 pm.

You are all aware that Mexico is the Focal Theme Country of the fair this year. In order to celebrate their 200 years of independence and 100 years of their revolution they have selected Kolkata, the Cultural Capital of India for this purpose. Famous poets, artists and writers of Mexico will be visiting the fair on the occasion. The inauguration, in keeping with tradition, will be made by a leading writer of that country. The prestigious Ashoke Sarkar Kumar Memorial Lecture and the Sushil Mukherjea Memorial Lecture will be delivered by two authors from Mexico. Over and above these the Mexican delegation plans to hold a number of attractive programmes which is expected to be announced by H.E. Ambassador of Mexico to India in the Press Conference to be held in Delhi in the middle of December 2009.

We shall be celebrating the 150 years of the Birth of Rabindranath Tagore. The fair for 2010 has been dedicated to the memory of the International Poet. There will be a number of seminars and debates on the creations of Rabindranath Tagore. There will also be a Tagore Pavilion.

The International Kolkata Book Fair 2010 will once again be held at the Milan Mela Prangan. However, the rent and other matters relating to the fair have created some complications. The ground rent has been almost doubled from that of 2009. We have decided to appeal to the honorable Minister and the authorities about re-consideration of the same. We hope, we may be able to convince them that Kolkata Book Fair is the largest forum for the spreading of literature and culture and that it is different from other conventional commercial fairs and should therefore be given special consideration.

We are glad to inform you that keeping in mind the financial hardships and difficulties faced by the small and medium regional language publishers, the stall rent for the participants in the 9 sq mt and 18 sq. mt stalls has not been increased this year. The Stall rent is same or similar to that charged in the various district and rural book fairs.

The 5 Rupee entry fee is also not being increased this year. Not only this, but in order to increase the popularity of books the Guild will be taking a novel measure. Those visitors who purchase books totaling a specified amount from the different book stalls will be given a refund of the cost of the ticket purchased from specified counters set up in the fair ground for the purpose. That is to say, most of the booklovers will enjoy free entry to the Kolkata Book Fair 2010.

From this year, the entry tickets and passes to the Book Fair will have barcodes and holograms. We hope, this will act as a strong deterrent to the piracy of tickets as well as let us have an accurate number of visitors who are entering the fair ground each day.

At the end we would inform you that the number of foreign countries intending to participate in the forthcoming Kolkata Book Fair is increasing day by day. Their request for additional space to set up their pavilions is also on the rise which is turning out to be a concern for us. We hope, by the end of this month we shall be able to let you have a complete list of the foreign participants and the probable names of the various writers and delegates visiting the Kolkata Book Fair.

Thank you all.
